Gabrielle Roy: Manitoba Countryscapes by Joanne Theirren.

This commemorative book illustrates the primary countryscapes that influenced Gabrielle Roy’s work, such as Meadow-Portage, Somerset, the Waterhen district, Dauphin, Camperville, Altamont, Marchand, Cardinal, and of course, the family house on Deschambault Street, which is now the Gabrielle Roy House museum.

Gabrielle Roy, the internationally renowned author from St. Boniface, was the recipient of many prestigious literary awards for her works, which were translated in 15 languages. These included the Governor General’s Award, France’s Prix Femina, the Canada Arts Council Award, and the New York’s Literary Guild Award for her novel The Tin Flute. She was also the first woman to become a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1947), and was made the Companion of the Order of Canada in 1967. Gabrielle Roy drew heavily on the landscapes and places that characterized her childhood and young adulthood in Manitoba.

Joanne Therrien is Past President of the Gabrielle Roy House Corporation in St. Boniface. Author, lecturer and entrepreneur, Joanne shares family ties with Gabrielle Roy, through their grandmothers who came to Manitoba from Saint-Jacques-de-l’Achigan and Saint-Alphonse-de-Rodriguez, Quebec.

The book is available in the bookshop, at the Riel tourism office, at Gabrielle-Roy House, or order it by calling 204-231-3274. The book retails for $19.99.

Marketing Canadian Museums into the 21st Century by Richard “Dick” Mathieu.

This book deals with marketing today’s Canadian museums. If you ‘d like to know more about Mathieu’s book, and how to order it, go to the High Traffic Marketing Institute website at www.htmi.ca.

Richard would also love an opportunity to present his book to AMM members in person in a course called Strategic Alliances.

Basically Strategic Alliances is a way of building up relationships with other organizations and businesses in order to promote your museum and create interest for your museum in your community.

If you’d be interested in having Mathieu conduct a course in this area, give me a call, drop me a line, and we’ll set it up.
