About the Museum:
Situated on the winding Atikokan River, the Atikokan Museum, Archives and Historical Park exhibits the unique history of the area. Featuring local history exhibits, regional rock samples, a 12,000 year old Barren Ground Caribou antler found at the bottom of Steep Rock Lake, and the Shevlin-Clarke logging locomotive. Discover the heart and spirit of Atikokan.
Large artifacts from lumber and mining sites are on display at the Historical Park, easily accessible by a foot bridge outside the museum. The Historical Park is also the landing site for Path of the Paddle and The Great Canadian Trail passes the museum. Paddlers are welcome to leave their gear in the museum while they pick up supplies or use the shelter of the Log Cabin porch to repack.
Steeped in a tradition of outdoor activity, Atikokanites have a paddling history from competitive cross-Quetico paddling between the United States and Canada to Canada's Centennial cross-country races and cross-continent solo paddling.
