Story

These are 1800s Monkman salt mine items including a salt pan, York Boat replica and illustrations.

Salt mining was established in the Winnipegosis area about 1820 by J. Monkman and sons. By 1870 they were shipping approximately 1,000 pounds of salt annually. These salt wells created employment for both the local Indigenous people and early European immigrants.

Salt is an essential mineral in the daily lives of Manitobans. Moving the salt from Winnipegosis to southern Manitoba helped carve out early waterway transportation routes for canoes and york boats.
