About the Museum:
The St. Vital Historical Society Inc. was formed in 1995 to preserve the history of the second oldest settlement in Winnipeg.
In May of 2008, the St. Vital Historical Society Inc. opened the St. Vital Museum, located in a former firehall and police station at 600 St. Mary's Road near the junction of St. Anne's Road. St. Vital was home to Louis Riel, Ambroise-Dydime Lepine and Andre Nault on whose farm Riel stopped the surveyors.
The museum is home to St. Vital Pumper #1, a 1939 fire truck as well as all eight gold records earned by The Guess Who, the Winnipeg band that outsold the Beatles and Rolling Stones in 1970.
There is a working jail cell, photo display of St. Vital sports heroes including: Jonathan Toews, who has won world hockey titles as a junior and adult, plus a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks, and a member of the 2010 Olympic Gold medal hockey team (named Best Forward); Sammi Joe Small, a two-time Olympic gold medalist goaltender with the Canadian women's hockey team; and Butch Goring, who won four straight Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders.
