About the Museum:
Explore the Heritage North Museum to gain insight into the history and culture of Northern Manitoba. Find interesting artifacts from the region's Indigenous peoples, traders, and nickel miners. Get a first-hand look at native wildlife, ancient fossils, and geological displays.
The museum is built in two log cabins, with a main cabin that houses mounted animals such as butterflies, owls, lynx, eagles, fish, and wolves as well as displays of indigenous textiles and a birch bark canoe. Don't miss the diorama with a traditional trappers' lean-to and a caribou hide tipi set up inside!
The other cabin emphasizes mining customs and equipment in Northern Manitoba; learn about how Thompson was founded for the local nickel mine. Each exhibit includes information boards next to them with more details. Finally don't forget to visit the gift shop - it's a treasure trove of items made by local artists, artisans, crafters and Indigenous creators. There is also a food section featuring birch syrup, wild rice, chaga tea and locally made honey!
