Professional Development - Association of Manitoba Museums
A museum building requires the same level of care and attention as the collections it protects. Like any well‑maintained home, it needs consistent upkeep to function safely and effectively. Regular maintenance ensures the building can continue to safeguard your collections and provide a welcoming, stable environment for visitors.
The learning objectives for this course include:

Apply appropriate methods for researching and documenting the museum building, its condition, and to understand the care and maintenance required for the facility.

Identify and describe the building systems essential to the safe, efficient, and comfortable operation of a museum environment.

Explain core principles of museum development and how they align with the institution’s mission, goals, and long‑term planning.

Recognize the primary areas of responsibility involved in facility management, identify causes of deterioration to the building, and learn about the care and maintenance of the museum facility.

Use critical thinking skills to assess the museum’s physical accessibility and planning for future change.
Who Should Attend: All museum staff, volunteers, and board members who are interested in maintaining and preserving their museum facility would benefit from this course.

October 21 & 22, 2026, Dalnavert Museum (61 Carlton St, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1N7) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days.

Fee:
Members, $250
Non-members, $300 each.
Fees include all course materials and lunch, snacks and coffee breaks.

Space is allocated on a first come, first served basis with a limit of 20 participants.
Cancellations will be subject to a $30 administration fee. Cancellations with less than 72 hours notice will not be refunded. No-shows will be invoiced for the FULL fee.

Specialized Courses
Specialized courses build upon the basic-level courses in our Certificate Program in Museum Practice or to address areas of concern/interest voiced by our members. These courses are either designed by the AMM or are brought in from other organizations.

Professional Development Grants/Bursaries:
The Canadian Museums Association (CMA) and The Winnipeg Foundation offer grants/bursaries for Professional Development. Applications should be submitted at least SIX weeks before the event.

Registration and Withdrawal Deadlines:
Withdrawals before the course's registration deadline will be subject to a $30 administration fee.
There are no refunds for cancellations after the registration deadline.
No-shows will be invoiced for the full fee.
